Hazel Elizabeth Pauline Stoddard,97, formerly of Palm Rd., Jamestown and Methodist Gardens, Falconer died Wednesday (January 27, 2010) in the Lutheran Home and Rehabilitation Center.
She was born January 26, 1913 in Jamestown, the daughter of the late Charles and Lena Swanson Melquist.
Hazel was a graduate of Jamestown High School and in earlier years was employed by National Worsted Mills, but for most of her life was a homemaker. She was a member of the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, North Main Street Sewing Club and Forget Me Not Birthday Club. Hazel enjoyed cooking, and will be remembered for her cookies and her gentle kind personality.
Surviving are her daughter Gale S. (John) Lown of Bemus Point, two granddaughters; Jenell (Nathan) Chase of Virginia Beach, Virginia, Johanna Lown of Bemus Point; two nieces Elaine Melquist, Jean Burt, a nephew Danny Melquist and her best friend and cousin Myrtle Lauinger.
She was preceded in death by her husband Merle Stoddard whom she married July 3, 1950 in the First Lutheran Church, Jamestown, who died August 23, 1981; three brothers Emil, Oscar and Paul Melquist , a nephew Charles Melquist and a niece Joyce Carlson.
The funeral will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday in the Falconer Funeral Home. Rev. Alison L. Leitzel pastor of Holy Trinity Church will officiate. Burial will be in Lake View Cemetery.
Friends will be received by the family one hour prior to the funeral service.
