Marjorie May Cummings, 95, of 261 Jackson Ave., W.E. Jamestown formerly of 21 E. DuQuesne St. Celoron went home to be with the lord Monday (July 19, 2010) in the Heritage Green Rehab and Skilled Nursing Center.
She was born in Eagleton, Montana, on the prairie on June 1, 1915, a daughter of the late Martin Sturm and Adelia Hawkins Sturm Glover.
Marjorie was a 1937 graduate of Falconer High School and in earlier years was employed by National Worsted Mills and Crescent Tool Company. Marjorie had worked for the Dutch Maid Clothing company as a saleswoman from 1970 to 1985 .
She was a member of many clubs and organizations of the community. Those included the Jamestown Moose Lodge where she was a life member, Falconer and Celoron Senior Citizens Club, Herman Kent Post 777, American Legion Auxiliary, the Celoron United Methodist Church, Celoron Methodist Women, Moon Brook Rebekah Star Lodge, Card Sharks Card Group, The 500 Card Club, Norolec Social Club, Happy Gang (which entertained seniors in nursing homes) and the Jamestown Audubon Society.
Marjorie loved wild life, flowers and her family was very important to her. She took bus trips to Nashville, Branson, Cape Cod and Atlantic City and trains trips to Chicago, Flagstaff, AZ and Las Vegas, NV.
She had a love of many things in her life. Most of all she love people: family, friends and even strangers. Her card parties, club meetings and many other organizations she belonged to were a major part of her life. Marjorie had a love and fascination for animals, plants and flowers. She was a nature explorer, taking part in camping, walking in the woods (finding flowers and berries) and tending to her own garden and plants called the "Friendship Garden". Marjorie was always a giving person, whether it be her money donations, her time , fundraising for causes. She always showed love and interest in her family, always wanting the best for everyone. Family traditions, family events and past family members were also important to her. She loved music whether it be Lawrence Welk, Frank Sinatra, Andy Williams or Eddie Arnold. Attending church and seeing fellow worshippers were also very important to her. She loved playing card games, skipbo, canasta and pinnocle.
Surviving is her son Ronald (Patricia) Cummings of W.E. Jamestown, four grandchildren: Lisa Bennett (Wayne Jones) of Jamestown, Richard Farr of Jamestown, Melissa (Christopher) Vergith of Greensboro, NC ,Jonathan Cummings U. S. Air Force stationed in New Jersey, three great grandchildren: Michelle Bennett, Melinda Bennett and Larry Bennett III, four great great grandchildren: Zachary and Brayden Pratt, Sebryna Rivera and David Johnson, a niece Roberta McCardle of Salisbury, NC and a nephew Jay Bolan of Jacksonville, FL.
She was preceded in death by her husband Clinton P. Cummings whom she married July 30, 1944, who died January 5, 1994, a daughter Linda Farr in 1983, a brother Robert Sturm in 1994 and her step father LaFayette Glover.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in the Falconer Funeral Home. Rev. Carolyn Stow pastor of Celoron United Methodist Church will officiate. Burial will be in Pine Hill Cemetery, Falconer.
Friends will be received by the family from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home.
