Fred A. Schrader Jr., 81, of Jamestown passed away Monday (March 19, 2018) in UPMC Chautauqua/ WCA Hospital.
A lifelong area resident, he was born December 15, 1936 in Jamestown, the son of the late Fred A. and Angeline F. Maslach Schrader Sr.
Fred was a 1954 graduate of Falconer High School. He graduated from SUNY Buffalo, SUNY Fredonia and Syracuse University with master's degrees in Art, Elementary Education and Special Education.
He was employed by his father's service station, Schrader's Kendall Gas Station. Another early job, was delivering hundreds of newspapers to many residents of Falconer. He continued this for many years, saving enough money to purchase a Corvette. After college, Fred participated in the Experiment in International Living program, in which he lived in Chili and Ascoli Piceno, Italy, which inspired him to travel to many foreign countries, including Russia.
Fred retired from Jamestown Public Schools in 1994 after 36 years of teaching and he continued to substitute teacher until 2014. He was employed by this district for over 50 years having taught fourth grade, art and special education. He was also employed by SUNY Fredonia as a supervising teacher to future teachers. Fred loved his work and had a positive impact on generations of Jamestown students.
He was a former member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church and served on its church council. He was a lifetime member of the Jamestown PTA; member of NYSUT, served on the board of directors of The Jamestown Federal Credit Union and was an honorary member of the Girl Scouts of America.
He enjoyed reading, art, being outdoors, gardening and traveling. He especially loved visiting Italy, sharing it with his family and celebrating his 75th birthday.
Surviving are his wife, Jean L. Johnson Schrader whom he married April 21, 1967 in the chapel at First Lutheran Church; his daughters: Jennifer Anne Schrader and Julie Beth Schrader both of Jamestown; and a sister Deloris Spink of Jamestown.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Fred A. Schrader III on June 22, 1969 and a brother, Louis A. Schrader on January 26, 2012.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday in the Falconer Funeral Home. Rev. Tara Eastman of Tree of Life Evangelical Lutheran Church will officiate. Burial will be in Sunset Hill Cemetery.
Friends will be received by the family from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday in the funeral home.
