Obituary of Valerie Cornell
Valerie A. "Val" (Barden) Cornell, 79, of Lakewood, NY, formerly of Garfield Rd., Jamestown died suddenly Wednesday, April 26, 2017.
A lifelong area resident she was born January 13, 1938 in Jamestown, NY. She is the daughter of the late William (Harold) Barden and Betty Johnson.
Val graduated from Jamestown High School in 1955 and earned her AS Degree from Rochester Institute of Technology. She retired from working in Quality Control at Trinity Biotech at age 76. Prior to that she worked for Clark Labs and Jamestown General Hospital as a lab technician.
Val was active in the lives of her four grandchildren and took every opportunity to spend time with them. She loved watching her grandson's football and hockey games and her granddaughter's cheer competitions and soccer games. She loved to travel and recently took trips to Mackinac Island, MI, Tucson, AZ and Myrtle Beach, SC. She had a great group of friends that she liked to go to lunch and out to dinner with. Rachel, Carol and Barb were very special to her. Val's hobbies include reading and shopping with her daughters and granddaughters.
She is preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Russell Cornell. Surviving are her two daughters, Cathleen Derby (and her husband Scott), of Bemus Pt, NY and Lori Posma of Myrtle Beach, SC, her three granddaughters, Allison Derby of Bemus Pt, NY, Cassidy and Josie Posma of Myrtle Beach, SC and grandson, Michael Derby of Bemus Pt, NY.
Visiting hours with the family 12noon-2pm Sunday at Falconer Funeral Home followed by a "Celebration" of life from 2pm-4pm Sunday at Steener's Pub, Rte 430 Greenhurst, NY directly across from Heritage Green.
In lieu of flowers, "practical" Val would instead want donations be made the Chautauqua Lake Association, 429 E. Terrace Ave., Lakewood, NY 14750-1538 or logon to www.chautauqualakeassociation.org.
