Obituary of C. Carlberg
Gordy Carlberg, 91, of Brookdale Senior Living in Lakewood, NY passed away Friday (January 12, 2018) in UPMC Chautauqua WCA hospital.
He was born on September 28, 1926 in Jamestown, NY, the son of the late Charles and Stella Johnson Carlberg.
Gordy was a 1945 graduate of Falconer High School and Bryant-Stratton Business College. He was a WWII veteran serving in the US Navy aboard the USS Nerius AS17 submarine tender and was stationed in the Aleutian Islands. He began his career as an assistant branch manager at the Public Loan Company. Afterwards he worked for the Universal Foods Corporation as a branch manager until 1988 and then as a bus driver for Falconer School District and Southwestern School District until 2004.
Gordy loved his family and enjoyed making people happy. He gave the best hugs! He will be remembered for his sense of humor and outgoing personality. He was very active in the community. He was a member of First Covenant Church, and also regularly attended Calvary Baptist Church. He was also a member of the Christian Motorcycle Association, the Carroll Lodge, Circling Squares, Penn-York Campers, Ross Grange 302, Glory River Riders, Lakewood Rod and Gun, Salvation Army Senior Citizens, First Covenant Church Senior Fellowship and was a 4H Saddle Horse Club leader for several years. He was an avid music lover and musician. He played trumpet as a member of the Glen Wakefield Orchestra and played drums in his own music group known as the Carlberg Trio. He also enjoyed playing bass guitar in duets with his wife Mary while they volunteered at church services and nursing homes around the community.
He is survived by his son David (Nancy) Carlberg of Jamestown; 4 grandchildren: Adrienne (Jeremy) Shaw of Pittsburgh, PA, Christopher (Sheila) Carlberg of Concord, NC, Stephanie (Matthew) Small of Chandler, AZ, Stacey (Aaron) Billquist of Jamestown; and 11 great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 66 years Mary, whom he married on June 17, 1950 in Jamestown and who passed away on February 1, 2017; his brother, Herbert Carlberg and sister, Lois Hartman, his daughter, Kathleen Jackson, and his son-in-law, Raymond Jackson.
To honor his wishes, visitation will not be observed. A private service for immediate family members will be held. Burial will be in Allen Cemetery. Memorials may be made to a charity of choice.
