Obituary of James Servis

James E. Servis, 94, of Jamestown passed away Wednesday (June 19, 2019) in UPMC Chautauqua. A lifelong area resident, he was born May 17, 1925 in Jamestown, the son of the late Clarence and Wilma Paton Servis. Jim is survived by his daughter Sandra (Matthew) Hoff of Jamestown; his son David (Lynn) Servis of Louisville, KY; a granddaughter Krista Hoff and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Helen L. Swanson Servis whom he married November 6, 1948 and who died November 20, 2016.

Jim was a graduate of Jamestown High School and was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during WWII.   He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for infantry heroism at the Siegfried Line in France.  After serving his country and being honorably discharged from the U.S. Army Jim worked many jobs locally.  He later was awarded Journeyman Plumber status in December 1957 by the NYS Apprenticeship Council after five years of service. He then attained his Master Plumbers License.

In the 1960’s Jim purchased a plumbing business in Falconer, NY which became J.E. Servis Plumbing & Heating.  He operated the business along with his partner George Short for many decades.  During that period Jim, Helen and their daughter Sandy created the popular Bath Shop at the Falconer location.

Jim was a member of the NYS Association of Plumbing, Heating and Cooling Contractors and served as Zone Director from 1972 to 1974 where he received an appreciation award for his service.  He was a member of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church and served on the church council. Both Jim and Helen were very involved with the church and its couples club.  On February 14, 1999 Bethlehem Lutheran Church awarded Jim and Servis Plumbing and Heating its Outstanding Service Award for their contributions and years of service to the church.  Jim was also a member of the Falconer Lions Club and served as president from 1972 to 1973; and was a member of the Ring School PTA having served as co-president with his wife Helen.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Falconer Funeral Home. Rev. Timothy J. Hoyer pastor of Bethlehem Lutheran Church will officiate.  Burial will be in Pine Hill Cemetery, Falconer. The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m Saturday in the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be donated to Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 20 N. Phetteplace St., Falconer, NY 14733.
