Obituary of Ramona M. Gustafson

On Wednesday, May 27, 2020, Ramona Mae Johnson Gustafson, 89 years old of Baker Estates, Ashville, went to be united with the “love of her life”, her soulmate, Ronald, who predeceased her on June 29, 2012. Ronald and Ramona were school sweethearts and were married on June 17 ,1950 by Pastor Felix Hanson, Immanuel Lutheran Church. They felt so blessed to have had 62 wonderful years together and so proud to have three loving and caring children, eight adorable grand children and 15 precious great grandchildren as well as two step grandchildren and five step great-grandchildren who they also loved. A lifetime area resident, Ramona was born March 9, 1931 in Jamestown, the daughter of the late Ethel Johnson Raymond. She was a 1949 graduate of the Celoron Branch of Southwestern School District. In her junior and senior year, she was employed after school by the former Jamestown Coca-Cola Bottling, Co. becoming Secretary and Bookkeeper for the firm before leaving to start a family. After being a “stay-at-home mom” for 12 years, which she thoroughly enjoyed, she became a Secretary for the Falconer School System, then Administrative Assistant for Jamestown Schools, and then Executive Director of the former Jamestown Girls Club. For 20 years, Ron and Mona spent their winters at their home in Bay Lake Estates, Nokomis, Florida, enjoying the warm weather, the Club House activities, trips and cruises, but most of all they just enjoyed being together wherever they were. Ramona was very active in the Bay Lake Red Hat chapter in Florida, but also enjoyed her Red Hat friends in this area. She was a member of the Lakewood Rod and Gun Club Auxiliary, the Busti-Lakewood Golden Agers and various card groups. In her younger years, she was involved in her childrens’ activities, was PTA President, Den Mother, Sunday School teacher and a Falconer School Board Member. She loved her plants and flowers, spending hours working in her garden, or just sitting on the porch, admiring them. She liked to solve Soduko and Fill-In puzzles when she wasn’t enjoying various activities with friends like playing cards, swimming, adults aerobics, lunches, dinners, Little Theater, trips, shows, and more. What she enjoyed most in life was her family, just being with family, and watching the little-ones at play, often joining them as well for fun and laughs. We will remember her as a devoted wife, mother, grandma, great-grandma whose greatest love was her family. Those left to cherish her memory are two sons: David (Christine) Gustafson of Leland, N.C. and Bruce (Paula) Gustafson of Gerry, N.Y and a daughter, Susan Gustafson of Frewsburg, N.Y. She also leaves eight grandchildren Jennifer Gilmore (Kelsey) of Fuquay-Varina, N.C., Jeffrey Gustafson of Dover, N.H., Michelle Comber (Todd) and Brian Gustafson both of Jamestown, N.Y., Annie Haugan (Ben) of Maple Grove, Minn., Melissa Conti (Robert Wilenius II) of Cape Coral, Fla., Samuel Conti (Tiffani) of Ellington, N.Y., and Danielle Gustafson (Dave) of Frewsburg, N.Y.; two step-grandchildren: Shannon O’Connor (Todd) of Lockport, N.Y. and Matthew Johnson of Gerry, N.Y. Also surviving are 15 precious great-grandchildren: Stella, Colby and Max Gilmore, Savannah Gustafson, Jordan and Kylie Comber, Caitlynn and Carter Haugan, Reese and Maclaren Wilenius, Levi and Ellison Conti, and Emma, Mae, and Susann Gustafson, five step-grandchildren: Brooke and Morgan O’Connor and Quinn, Sawyer, and Noah Johnson. At Ramona’s request, visitation will not be observed. Since Ramona and her husband Ron were always hand-in-hand in life, they wanted to be together in death, too. A private graveside service will be held at the convenience of the family with inurnment at the Sunset Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Panama Volunteer Fire Department or to a charity or organization of your choice. A celebration of life in honor of Ramona will be held at a later date with details to follow.
