Obituary of G. Craig Miller

G. Craig Miller G. Craig Miller passed away on August 28, 2021 at the age of 78 after an extended illness. Craig was born on March 2, 1943 to Robert and Margaret (Mattison) Miller. He passed peacefully on his mother’s birthday. He grew up in Falconer, NY and often spoke of his fun-loving childhood days. Craig enjoyed playing neighborhood baseball with his buddies and being a member of the boys’ high school basketball and baseball teams. He had many interesting jobs while growing up including working at the Chautauqua County Fish Hatchery. Following high school, Craig attended Simmons School of Mortuary Science and Embalming. Upon graduation, he intended to return to work at the Falconer Funeral Home which was owned by his uncle, Fred Mattison. Instead, Craig went to work at the Bank of Jamestown as the assistant to the bank president. Craig found that he enjoyed finance, and began a career in banking. He grew in his role with the bank, serving as bank manager at both the Fluvanna and Southside locations. Later, Craig moved into lending and became a Lending Officer at Chase First Bank in downtown Jamestown. He loved this role as it allowed him to help families and business owners find the money they needed to either expand their business or purchase a home. He would often lend money based solely on a handshake and a promise to repay. After leaving the bank, Craig moved into the financial services industry at Alliance Advisory Group. He spent many years with AAG building a private wealth management business. His daughter, Elisabeth, joined him after completing college, and together they started Miller Hall Financial Professionals, located in Bemus Point. Craig was incredibly proud of their partnership and loved the relationships he built with clients. Craig found great joy in serving his community. He served for over 48 years on the Town of Ellery Board as Deputy Supervisor. One of his proudest achievements was the establishment of the Town of Ellery Park in Greenhurst, NY. Craig loved watching children and families use the park facilities for sports and recreation. On June 12, 2021, Craig was honored by having both a pavilion dedicated to him and the day denoted as “G. Craig Miller Day” in the Town of Ellery. Craig also served on many local community boards and donated countless hours to various activities. He served as the softball coach for the Fletcher Flyers team under the Jamestown Girls Club. Craig enjoyed working with the players and coached the team to many local championship games. He also spent several years as the Jamestown High School Marching Band Boosters Club Treasurer. He was always considered a favorite chaperone by the band kids and traveled with them to Disney World, New York City, Baltimore, Syracuse, and many other locations. Craig always wanted to be with his daughters, Lynn and Beth, and was in the stands for every band show and any activity in which they were involved. Craig’s favorite saying was one his father taught him: “Get up every day and help someone, and you’ll always have a good life.” He lived this principle every day. Craig is survived by his wife, Nancy (Hoy) Miller, whom he married on August 10, 1974 in Bemus Point, NY. Together they made their home in Sinclairville, NY. He is also survived by his two daughters, Lynn Kutschke (Andrew) and Elisabeth Hall (Joseph). Craig’s pride and joy were his four grandchildren: Joseph, Grace, Robert, and Katherine. Craig was fortunate to have a longtime relationship with two childhood friends, Ken Lyon and Mark Steele. Both of these men continued to visit Craig throughout his illness. He cherished their friendship. The family will receive friends from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Falconer Funeral Home. A Christian Wake service will be held at 4:45 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday in SS Peter & Paul Catholic Church of Holy Apostles Parish. Rev. Dennis Mende pastor of the church will be celebrant. Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be donated to the Town of Ellery Park Fund, P.O. Box 429, Bemus Point, NY 14712.
