Obituary of Richard A. Nelson

Richard A. Nelson, 90, of Jamestown passed away Tuesday (October 5, 2021) in UPMC Chautauqua. A lifelong area resident he was born August 14, 1931 in Jamestown the son of the late Arthur and Ruth Peterson Nelson. Dick was a graduate of Jamestown High School and was a veteran of the Korean War serving in the U.S. Navy. He served in the U.S. Naval Reserves for 37 years retiring as CWO 4. In earlier years Dick along with his father owned and operated Nelson’s Quaker State service station in Jamestown. Prior to retirement Dick was employed by United Refining Company in the Marketing Division retiring in 1995. Dick was a member of the Viking Lodge, War Vets Recreation, Lakewood Rod & Gun Club, Herman Kent Post American Legion. He was also a member of the Vikings Drum and Bugle Corps. Dick enjoyed traveling to Viking Drum and Bugle Corps competitions and served as a percussion judge. He enjoyed his family, golfing, traveling and music. During retirement he would often play golf three times a week. Surviving is his sister JoHanna (Tim) Holt of Sparta, TN; nieces: Sandra Kent, Kellie Newton; nephews: Scott (Trina) Newton, Randall Sprague, Dan (Sarah) Holt; a great niece Natalie Holt and a great nephew Corey Sprague. He was preceded in death by his wife Joan Newton Nelson whom he married July 25, 1953 in Bethlehem Lutheran Church, who died November 9, 2016 and a son Barry R. Nelson on December 16, 2013. The family would like to thank Dicks caregivers; Kathy, Danielle and Tina for the care he received during this past year. A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 12, 2021 in Pine Hill Cemetery, Falconer. Rev. Timothy J. Hoyer pastor of Bethlehem Lutheran Church will officiate.
