Obituary of Herbert C. Anderson

Herbert Clair Anderson, age 92, died on December 5, 2021 at the Hospice House of Dayton, Ohio surrounded by family, following a stroke one week prior. Herb was born in Jamestown, New York on May 30, 1929, the son of Florence (Norton) and Fred J. Anderson. He lived most of his life in Chautauqua County: Celeron, Busti and Jamestown. He graduated from Jamestown High School in 1947. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean war 1951-1953. After finishing a 4-year apprenticeship in toolmaking, he worked 25 years at Art Metal, Inc. until closing in 1971, then Sunco Tool and finally at Cummins Engine until retirement in 1996. He loved sports all his life including bowling, golf and especially playing baseball for the Steel Partition Bombers and various softball teams. He then took up umpiring baseball games after his playing days were over. In later years he enjoyed watching his daughters and then grandchildren play sports, rarely missing a game or swim meet. He married Ina C. Carlson in 1956 at Immanuel Lutheran Church and lived on Indiana Avenue in Jamestown for 57 years. There he made lots of great memories and lifetime friends. He loved to travel, first with his family and later as a longtime member of Jamestown Senior Center. He continued to travel frequently his entire life, joining his children and grandchildren on a National Park tour at the age of 82 and even visiting Belize and Honduras on his 90th birthday cruise. He had travelled to see family in the midwest the week before his passing, and celebrated Thanksgiving in Indiana and Ohio. He is survived by his two daughters: Leslie (Dave) Josephson of Lebanon OH, and Alicia (Tom) Haugh of Raleigh NC and 5 grandchildren: Andrea (Austin) Windsor, Alex Haugh, Christopher Haugh, Benjamin Haugh, Natalie Haugh and great-grandson Graham Windsor in Westfield, IN. A private family service will be held in late August in Jamestown. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to : The Hospice House Project of Chautauqua Hospice, 20 W. Fairmount Avenue, Lakewood, NY 14750.
