Catherine Barone

Obituary of Catherine S. Barone

Catherine Shearman Barone was called home on February 14, 2022. Catherine was born on April 21, 1934, to Mary (Mossman) Shearman and Richard P. Shearman. A graduate of Jamestown High School, Catherine went on to attend Purdue University, eventually transferring to Johns Hopkins University to study nursing until she left school to marry her beloved husband, Charles A. Barone. In 1966, Catherine and Charles purchased a 200 acre farm where they raised their two children. Catherine’s Foxwood Farm provided a sanctuary for many wild animals, including turkey and deer which she faithfully fed by hand and defended from hunters. Enrolling in 1981, Catherine earned an Associates Degree from Jamestown Community College, followed by a BA from Fredonia State. Taking classes in psychology and philosophy, Catherine hoped to keep up at the dinner table with her two children, college students themselves at the time. Catherine was an outspoken member of her high school debate team, a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and an inductee of the Phi Beta Kappa academic honor society. A truly lifelong adventurer, Catherine travelled to Europe and North Africa, as well as extensively throughout the US—especially fond of the American Southwest, where she rafted the Colorado River and scoured the local pawn shops to add to her collection of turquoise jewelry. An avid seamstress, Catherine made many of her iconic outfits on her vintage singer sewing machine. Catherine’s other loves and pastimes included but were not limited to gardening, oil painting, sunbathing, restoring antiques, skiing, rescuing animals, and Lena’s pizza. She grew up sailboat racing on Chautauqua Lake with her father, the legendary “Handlebar” Shearman, and passed this tradition onto her son. Her and Charles spent their summers cruising the lake on their boat, the Baroness, docking at the Chautauqua Institution and attending concerts in the Amphitheater. She was a volunteer at the former Jefferson Help Center and a volunteer server at the annual Gerry Rodeo. Catherine is predeceased by her husband, Charles A. Barone (Feb. 13, 2010) and many beloved pets. She is survived by her daughter Dr. Blair W. Barone, son Gardiner S. Barone, JD. and his wife Magdolina, and three grandchildren, to whom she was beloved “OG” (“old grandma,” at her request upon turning 70): Sophronia Neff Barone, student at Reed College, Baron R. Karpuska, student at Lynn University, and Sydney Mossman Barone, student at Sacred Heart University. Catherine, you made our days golden. At Catherine’s request, no service will be held.
